Switching energy suppliers can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. In this FAQ, we'll explain the process of switching and what you can expect during and after the switch.

The Cooling-Off Period

Did you know that energy suppliers have a cooling-off period of 14 days? This means that from the date you submit your switch, you have 14 days to change your mind and cancel the switch without any penalties. It's important to note that suppliers will start processing the switch during this period (unless you tell them otherwise), but you still have the right to cancel penalty-free within 14 days.

The Switching Process

The actual switching process can take up to five working days to complete. If it takes longer than this, you’ll be entitled to £30 compensation from your new supplier. You also have the option to specify a later switch date, usually up to four weeks later, if you prefer. Just keep in mind that this may vary depending on the supplier you're switching to.

During the switch, you won't experience any interruptions in your energy supply. It should be a seamless handover from one provider to the other. The only thing that's changing is the billing, not the actual gas and electricity you're supplied.

Keeping You Updated

Energy suppliers are required to keep you updated on your switch. This can be done through letters, phone calls, or emails. Be sure to keep an eye on your junk or spam folder in case any updates end up there. If you have any questions or concerns about your switch, you can always contact your energy supplier for an update.

Final Bill from Your Old Provider

Your old provider should send you a final bill no later than six weeks after the switch. If you are owed any money, they are required to refund it to you within 10 working days after sending your final bill.

Cancelling After the Switch

You have a 14-day cooling-off period to cancel your switch once your application has been submitted. However, if you choose to cancel after the switch has been completed, you will be switched back to your original supplier. Keep in mind that you will still need to pay the firm for any energy you use during this time, and may need to pay exit fees if you're outside of the cooling-off period.

Conclusion

Switching energy providers may seem like a complicated process, but it's actually quite simple. Just remember the 14-day cooling-off period, keep an eye on updates from your supplier, and don't hesitate to contact them if you have any questions. With this knowledge, you can confidently switch to a new energy provider and potentially save money on your energy bills.
