Switching energy suppliers can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. In this FAQ, we'll explain the process of switching and what you can expect during and after the switch.
The switching process
You can
Opt to switch ASAP. Energy providers have up to five working days to complete your switch.
Switch after your cooling off period. You get a 14 day period to change your mind without penalty, and you can opt for the switch to start after this period has expired
Switch on a chosen date up to four weeks later. Not all providers offer this, so check with the chosen new supplier if this is something you want.
If it takes longer than five days (or isn't done by the date you specify), you’ll be entitled to £40 compensation from your new supplier, provided you've supplied all the information it needs to complete the switch.
During the switch, you won't experience any interruptions in your energy supply. It should be a seamless handover from one provider to the other. The only thing that's changing is the billing, not the actual gas and electricity you're supplied.
The cooling-off period
Energy suppliers have a cooling-off period of 14 days. This means that from the date you submit your switch, you have 14 days to change your mind and cancel the switch without any penalties.
Suppliers will start processing the switch during this period (unless you tell them otherwise), but you still have the right to cancel penalty-free within 14 days (though if the new supplier has started to supply you with energy, you'll need to pay for that).
You can still cancel after this (and go back to your old supplier, or switch again) but you'll need to pay for the energy you use, and any exit fees.
