If you have solar panels installed at your home, you may be eligible for a feed-in tariff (FIT) or smart export guarantee (SEG) payment from your energy supplier. These payments are designed to incentivize the use of renewable energy sources and can help offset the cost of your energy bills.
Switching Energy Suppliers
Switching your gas and electricity energy supplier should not affect the payments you receive from your existing FIT or SEG provider. Your current provider is obligated to continue making payments to you, even if you switch to a different energy supplier.
You can switch your energy supplier as normal through Cheap Energy Club or any other switching site. This will not impact your FIT or SEG payments.
Changing FIT or SEG Providers
If you would like to change your FIT or SEG provider, you will need to arrange this directly with your chosen supplier. Unfortunately, this cannot be done through Cheap Energy Club.
Most of the major energy companies are required to offer an export tariff to customers who generate renewable energy at home through solar panels. However, some smaller companies do not offer this. Ofgem has a list of companies who offer SEG and FIT.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The SEG was introduced in April 2019 and replaced the FIT scheme. Under the SEG, energy suppliers with 150,000 or more customers are required to offer tariffs to households in England, Scotland, and Wales. These tariffs pay a set rate for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity generated from solar panels that is not used by the household and is instead sold back to the grid. The amount you receive will vary depending on your energy supplier.
